West Side Story is a 2021 musical romance film adapted from the stage musical of the same name, which in turn is based on the play Romeo and Juliet about Tony, co-founder and former member of white street gang the Jets, and Maria, sister of Bernardo, the leader of Puerto Rican street gang the Sharks, who meet and fall in love in spite of the rivalry between the two gangs, which results in tragedy for all sides. The film is directed by Steven Spielberg and is written by Tony Kushner, and is the second film adaptation after Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins' 1961 film. The film stars Rachel Zegler (in her screen debut), A**** E*****, Ariana DeBose, David Alverez, Mike Faist, Corey Stoll, Brian d'Arcy James, iris menas and Rita Moreno (the only returning player from the prior iteration). The film had its world premiere at the Jazz on Lincoln Center in New York City on November 29, 2021, and was released theatrically less than two weeks later on December 10, less than two months after the 60th anniversary of the previous version.
