West Side Story is a 1961 musical romance film adapted from the stage musical of the same name, which in turn is based on the play Romeo and Juliet about Tony, co-founder and former member of white street gang the Jets, and Maria, sister of Bernardo, the leader of Puerto Rican street gang the Sharks, who meet and fall in love in spite of the rivalry between the two gangs, which results in tragedy for all sides. The film is directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and is written by Ernest Lehman. The film stars Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, Russ Tamblyn, Simon Oakland, William Bramley, and Ned Glass. It was released October 18, 1961.
