The Tragedy of Macbeth is a 2021 drama film based on the play Macbeth about a Scottish noble who, after being told by three witches that he is destined become King of Scotland, becomes mad with power and goes on a killing spree to secure his place on the throne. The film is directed and written by Joel Coen, and is his first film without the involvement of Ethan. The film stars Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand, Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell, Corey Hawkins, Harry Melling, Kathtyn Hunter, and Brendan Gleeson. The film had its world premiere as the opening night film of the 2021 New York Film Festival on September 24, 2021, was given a limited theatrical release on Christmas Day, and streamed digitally on Apple TV+ three weeks later on January 15, 2022.
