The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a 2003 fantasy drama film directed by Peter Jackson based on the second and third volumes of J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings". It is the third and concluding installment in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, following The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and The Two Towers (2002). It was the first and only time a fantasy film has won the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film is tied for largest number of awards won with Ben-Hur (1959) and Titanic (1997). It has an all-star cast that includes, Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Liv Tyler, Mirando Otto, Bernard Hill, Karl Urban, Ian Holm, John Rhys-Davies, Andy Serkis, Christopher Lee, Brad Dourif and David Wenham.
