Sound of Metal is 2020 drama film about a heavy metal drummer and recovering drug addict named Ruben who begins to lose his ability to hear and, upon finding out he can't afford cochlear implants, goes to a rural shelter for the deaf in order learn how to live without hearing. The film is directed by Darius Marder, who also co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Abraham Marder and developed the story with Derek Cianfrance. The film stars Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke, Paul Raci, Lauren Ridloff, and Mathieu Amalric. Released by Amazon Prime, the film had it's world premiere at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2019, and began a limited theatrical release on November 20, 2020, followed by digital streaming on December 4.
