Nomadland is a 2020 drama about a recently widowed woman named Fern who, upon losing her job in wake of the shut down of Empire, Nevada's US Gypsum plant, travels around the US as a nomad. The film is directed and written by ChloƩ Zhao, who also edited the film herself, based on Jessica Bruder's book, Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century. The film stars Frances McDormand and David Strathairn, as well as real-life nomads Linda May, Swankie, and Bob Wells. The film had it's world premiere at both the 77th Venice Film Festival and the 45th Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2020, where it won both of the festivals' top prizes, the Golden Lion and the Grolsch People's Choice Award. It began a limited theatrical release in the United States on January 29, 2021, followed by a wide release and streaming digitally on Hulu on February 19.
