Directed by Peter Farrelly, the film was written by Farrelly, Brian Currie and Vallelonga's son, Nick Vallelonga, based on interviews with his father and Shirley, as well as letters his father wrote to his mother. It stars Viggo Mortensen, Mahershala Ali, Linda Cardellini, Sebastian Maniscalco, Dimiter D. Marinov and Mike Hatton. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released by Universal Pictures. Plot[]
A working-class Italian-American bouncer, Tony "Lip" Vellelonga, becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist, Don Shirley, on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South. Disparate their differences, the pair witness and endure America's appalling injustices on the road, they find a newfound respect for each other. In doing so, they would nurture a friendship and understanding that would change both their lives.
