Girl with a Pearl Earring is a British 2003 drama film directed by Peter Webber. The screenplay was adapted by screenwriter Olivia Hetreed based on the novel of the same name by Tracy Chevalier. The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Colin Firth, Tom Wilkinson, Judy Parfitt, Essie Davis, Joanna Scanlan and Cillian Murphy. The film is named after a painting of the same name by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. The film uses distinctive lighting and color schemes similar to Vermeer's paintings.

Plot[]
Griet is a maid in the house of painter Johannes Vermeer. Vermeer's wealthy patron and sole means of support, Van Ruijven, commissions him to paint Griet with the intent that he will have her for himself before it is finished. She must somehow secretly pose for the crucial painting without the knowledge of Vermeer's wife, avoid Van Ruijven's grasp, and protect herself from the cruel gossip of the world of a 17th century servant.
