Dune is a 1984 sci-fi film about Paul Atreides' journey from royal heir to revolutionary. The film is directed and written by David Lynch, based on Frank Herbert's book of the same name and was the second attempt at adapting the book into a visual medium after Alejandro Jodorowsky's never made film, as well as the first to actually make it to celluloid. The film stars Francesca Annis, Leonardo Cimino, Brad Dourif, José Ferrer, Linda Hunt, Freddie Jones, Richard Jordan, Kyle MacLachlan, Virginia Madsen, Silvana Mangano, Everett McGill, Kenneth McMillan, Jack Nance, Siân Phillips, Jürgen Prochnow, Paul L. Smith, Patrick Stewart, Sting, Dean Stockwell, Max von Sydow, Alicia Witt, and Sean Young. The film had its world premiere at the Eisenhower Theater in Washington D.C. on December 3, 1984, and was released a week and a half later on December 14.
