The film stars Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, Borys Szyc, Agata Kulesza, Cédric Kahn, Jeanne Balibar, Adam Woronowicz, and Adam Ferency. Cold War received acclaim from critics. It competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where Pawlikowski won the award for Best Director. It also received the Golden Lions Award at the 43rd Gdynia Film Festival, five 2018 European Film Awards and at the 72nd British Academy Film Awards earned four nominations, including Best Direction and Best Film Not in the English Language.
