Christian Bale is a British actor. Best known for his roles in American films, Bale has starred in both big budget Hollywood films and the smaller projects from independent producers and art houses. Bale first caught the public eye at the age of 13, when he was cast in the starring role of Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun (1987). In 2000, he garnered critical acclaim for his portrayal of serial killer Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. He earned a reputation as a method actor after he lost 63 pounds to play the role of Trevor Reznik in The Machinist (2004). He is perhaps better known for his portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). In 2010, Bale portrayed Dicky Eklund in the biopic The Fighter, which won him his first Academy Award. Other notable films to his credit include, Henry V (1989), Little Women (1994), Pocahontas (1995), The Portrait of a Lady (1996), Velvet Goldmine (1998), Howl's Moving Castle (2004), The New World (2005), The Prestige (2006), 3:10 to Yuma (2007), and I'm Not There (2007).
