It is a period drama based on the semi-autobiographical novella "A River Runs Through It" (1976) written by Norman Maclean (1902–90), adapted for the screen by Richard Friedenberg.

Plot[]
A true story about two boys, Norman and Paul, growing up in Montana spanning time from World War I to the Prohibition Era. One is rebellious of his father, Presbyterian minister Rev. Maclean, while the other has his feet on the ground. The one love they all have is fly fishing.
